About sore throats and tonsillitis
A sore throat is soreness, pain or irritation in the throat, often caused by a viral infection such as a cold. Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils specifically, and can cause a very sore throat, swollen and red tonsils (sometimes with white patches), difficulty swallowing, and a high temperature. Most sore throats and cases of tonsillitis are viral and improve within a week without antibiotics.
