Who you’ll see in Bristol
About ear infection
An ear infection is assessed with a GP examination — in clinic in Bristol, or by video for advice — to work out whether it's a middle-ear or outer-ear problem. Worth booking if ear pain has lasted more than three days, there's any discharge, a high temperature, persistent hearing loss, or repeated infections. Where antibiotics or ear drops are needed, they're agreed with you the same day. Full detail is on our national page at /conditions/ear-infection/.
About ear infections
An ear infection affects either the middle ear (behind the eardrum) or the outer ear canal, and the two have different causes and treatments. Symptoms typically include ear pain, a feeling of fullness or blockage, mild hearing loss, and sometimes discharge or a mild fever. Middle-ear infections are common in children and often follow a cold, while outer-ear infections are usually linked to moisture or irritation in the ear canal.
What happens in the appointment
In Bristol, an ear infection appointment means an ear examination in clinic, or a video review of your symptoms, either way with a clear next step.
