Who you’ll see in St John's Wood
About ear infection
In St John's Wood, a GP examines the ear in clinic, or reviews your symptoms by video, to tell a middle-ear problem from an outer-ear one. Worth booking if ear pain has lasted more than three days, there's any discharge, a high temperature, persistent hearing loss, or repeated infections. Antibiotics or ear drops, where appropriate, are agreed with you the same day. See our national ear infection page at /conditions/ear-infection/ for more.
About ear infections
There are two main types of ear infection: middle-ear (behind the eardrum) and outer-ear (in the ear canal), each with different causes. Common symptoms are ear pain, a blocked or full feeling, mild hearing loss, and occasionally discharge or a slight fever. Middle-ear infections are especially common in children and often develop after a cold, whereas outer-ear infections tend to follow moisture or irritation in the canal.
