Who you’ll see in Chichester
About chest infection
In Chichester, a GP starts by listening to your chest and going through your history, either by video or in person, to judge whether the cause is viral or bacterial. Warning signs worth acting on include a cough that's lasted over three weeks, a fever that won't come down, blood or rust-coloured mucus when you cough, or feeling breathless at rest. Where a bacterial infection is likely, antibiotics are agreed with you. Full detail is on our national page at /conditions/chest-infection/.
About chest infections
Chest infections affect the lungs or airways and can be viral or bacterial in origin. They typically cause a persistent cough that may bring up phlegm, a raised temperature, breathlessness, wheezing, and pain when breathing or coughing. Viral cases are more common and usually settle within a few weeks, while bacterial infections sometimes need antibiotics.
What happens in the appointment
