Who you’ll see in Wokingham
About chest infection
A GP listens to your chest and reviews your history — by video or in clinic in Wokingham — to work out whether the infection is likely to be viral or bacterial. It's worth being seen promptly for a cough lasting more than three weeks, a persistent high fever, coughing up blood or rust-coloured mucus, or shortness of breath even at rest. If antibiotics are needed, they're agreed with you the same day. Fuller clinical detail is on our national chest infection page at /conditions/chest-infection/.
About chest infections
A chest infection is an infection of the lungs or airways, and can be either viral or bacterial. Common symptoms include a persistent cough (which may bring up phlegm), a high temperature, breathlessness, wheezing, and chest pain when breathing or coughing. Most chest infections are caused by viruses and clear up on their own within a few weeks, but bacterial infections may need antibiotic treatment.
